The Irish times posted an interesting article, which discusses amongst other topics, a translation project called QuantiQual, an Irish Research Council-funded collaboration between literary translation scholars. It is studying the effect of Indirect translations – which is the use of an intermediary language such as English to translate between 2 rarer languages, such as Latvian-Indonesian. First the source language is translated to the intermediary language, and then from there, to the target language. The cultural erosion that may take place from this process is one of the things that is being studied.
