Nowadays, it’s quite easy to book an interpreting session online or on phone with the language pair and event date. But besides the basic information, here are five things you need to know and consider carefully before booking an interpreting session.
1. Actual event duration
It’s not always possible for people to know in advance how long they need to keep the interpreter, and it happens quite often that the event lasts longer than people previously expected.
Most of the time, this isn’t a big issue, as most interpreters are able to work overtime, but at an additional cost. However, it’s noteworthy that the additional hourly rate may be slightly higher than the rate at which you book the service beforehand. Moreover, it happens that the interpreter might need to go and cannot work any longer, so it’s important to ensure that the time you book for the interpreting session would be long enough to cover your whole event. You may need to consider every factor that would lead to a delay or somehow make your event last longer.
In every country, there are quite a few dialects, which may be either slightly or significantly different from the mainstream language used by people from that country. For instance, there are more than 200 dialects in China, and although some of them are similar, the others can be extremely different. If you are ordering an interpreting session for someone else, make sure to ask the person if he or she speaks a specific dialect or the mainstream language. It can be quite nerve-racking to find that the person speaks a different dialect and cannot understand well after the interpreter arrives. If you are confused about the dialects, you may ask the interpreting companies for clarification, as they are often familiar with the common dialects spoken in certain areas.
People value their privacy especially when the interpreting session is for legal or medical purposes. Reliable interpreting companies require their interpreters to sign a non-disclosure agreement beforehand, which is strictly enforced by the companies to ensure and protect your privacy. Make sure to check with the company whether the interpreter has signed the agreement before you place an order.
4. Special request
Sometimes the interpreter or the interpreting company may be able to help you more than just interpreting. If you need technical support or need someone to help you with event setup and coordination, you may ask the company for help before you place an order. Although additional cost may incur, it may save your much effort if the cost is acceptable.
People may worry about whether the interpreter would travel to a remote area to deliver the service. Most of the time, this is not a problem. Our interpreters are able to travel even up to 100 miles from a large city to interpret for you. If there is no interpreter available to come, you may use the 7/24 telephonic interpreting service anytime, even you don’t have a reservation beforehand.
